If you’ve been trying to keep up your sense of humor during this pandemic, social media memes have been one way to keep us laughing together. With so many new habits in our days, it was just a matter of time before face mask memes became part of the landscape.
It didn’t take long.
While some of the images out there are not exactly, shall we say…family-friendly, we have chosen a few of the lighter ones that poke fun at our change of habits. Some even point out creative ways to come up with your own face mask when a conventional one is not available.
The jealous girlfriend face mask meme
Mike Madden was ahead of the curve. The editor of Post Outlook – and former editor of the Washington Post – identified the early days of the trend as he recognized the human desire for a simple solution to a problem.
This face mask meme of a guy checking out a woman labeled as a face mask – while holding hands with his jealous girlfriend – has been used in countless other scenarios over the years. This time, it reminded us how tempting it is to overlook the more restrictive advice in favor of wearing a face mask and calling it a day.
Since Mike posted this image on Feb. 28, it has accumulated over 28,000 likes.
The anti-virus CD meme
Shortly afterwards, @StareCat shared this hilarious image of a man with a Norton AntiVirus CD strapped to his face.
His wide-eyed look plays up the double entendre of the face mask joke, since clearly a CD won’t stand a chance of stopping novel coronavirus. Many people likely haven’t seen a CD in so long that there is a sense of nostalgia for this type of technology. After all, the date on the CD is 2003.
The actual virus?
A unique outfit caused quite a stir when it made a public appearance, shortly after strict isolation requirements began to lift in certain parts of the world. While it seems the person inside wanted to just hold people at bay, the extensions certainly made many people think of the actual virus cell.
DIY solutions that will crack you up
When masks were in short supply, people did what they could. This shopper in Italy dug out his scuba mask to get him through a grocery shopping trip when stores re-opened.
Others resorted to using a spliced onion, costumes, large water jugs, and large plastic bags. If nothing else, you have to admire the creativity and ingenuity to come up with these workarounds.
What’s hanging from your car mirror?
Another take on a similar theme, this image from Instagram shows the evolution of what previous generations have hung on their rearview mirrors.
Once, tree-shaped fresheners were common. Then light-refracting CDs. For some, a cross was a go-to decoration. Now…the face mask. Hopefully, not one that has already been used!
Tan line jokes
There are a few memes predicting what we will all look like after a few months with masks on our faces. One of the early ones shows an older couple with distinct tan lines in a very recognizable shape.
Many people can relate to interesting tan lines on other parts of our bodies, so it’s funny to imagine how we will all look after some time outside this summer.
The hairy face mask meme
While some people opt for standard fabric masks, one man highlighted by @MemeTiddies on April 5 found a whole new material.
He tosses his dust filter mask over this shoulder with a stern look on his face before folding his long beard up over his head. The addition of a hat and sunglasses gives him a look that’s equal parts Cousin Itt and Muppet Babies. It’s perhaps one of the most popular face mask jokes out there in the memesphere.
Even emojis are getting into the act
With emoji makers creating little images for virtually every aspect of life, it shouldn’t be a surprise that a range of masked faces is already in the works. It seems that only one option is available by default on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, but if you want you can download the whole family!
Dinosaur suits cover your face, right?
For those who love the look of the inflatable dinosaur face, here is one to make you smile. After all, there is nothing like seeing a dinosaur in an office.
If you don’t care for this type of suit, look to the polar bear and unicorn versions, instead!
Another reason to stand back!
This message in good old marker makes it pretty clear that this man wants you to keep his distance. He also provides an olfactory incentive. Fortunately, smells don’t travel the internet…yet.
Angels wear masks, too
This meme posted by @KILTedbreeder on May 21 jokes about what a Victoria Secret face mask would look like. If you’ve seen the company’s underwear line, you get the joke. One would need to take social distancing to the next level for this mask to have any effect.
So do cats
Social media fans are famous for putting their pets on display in various positions and outfits. We’ve all seen them (and maybe posted a few cat shots of our own here and there).
However, this GIF of a cat in a paper bag mask is an extra fun one, particularly due to the cat’s body language. Watch and enjoy.
And don’t forget the dogs!
Also on the pet theme, @thetailofrocky on Instagram shows how NOT to wear a face mask, three different ways. (Hint: Not on your head or dangling from your nose.) Finally, it all comes together in the final frame.
Even future Grandpa shares memes
If you feel that everyone is sharing coronavirus-themed memes right now, you may be right.
To wrap up, we share this image of an older man telling his grandson how he spent his days during quarantine. Like many people, he was stuck on social media and not filling his days as productively as he might have.
